Barkey Von Schnauzer to the Rescue !!!

Welcome to 2008 and Happy New Year to all.

We continue on our journey of saving as many animals as we can - and it seems some days that the task never ends.  Our membership base and volunteers continue to grow and the people who reach out to help us, truly do help us make a difference.

We started off the new year with a very successful adoption at Uviversity Centre adjacent to BJ's and Leroy Selmon's Restaurant.  So many people stopped by to see our dogs and wish us well.  Some signed up to volunteer, some became members and all shared stories of their own dogs or dogs they had.  We never get tired of talking about dogs and cats.  They are just plain fun.  So whether or not you adopt - stop by our events and just say HI..pet a furry head!  Make a new friend.  If you came by, you probably met Barkey Von Schnauzer!  He had a welcome bark for everyone!  Of course he quit barking when he was smooched, hugged....got the old ear rubs...and the next week, Barkey found a new home!  More on that...later!!

From that Adoption Event, Betty Lupacchino, of www.sarasotapetphoto.com stopped in to take some photos for the upcoming issue of Sarasota Pet.  If you have not seen this excellent new magazine...what are you waiting for???  Full of great news, beautiful photography of the animals...just great local information.  Stop into Roxy's Pet Depot on Honore, around the corner from the Staples Store...she carries them.  And Max's Dog Bakery downtown...they carry it also.  You can also view it online and order a subscription.  I think this new magazine will be very popular and loaded with information and news.  Check out their website...and look for the next issue to have a story on Honor Sanctuary Animal Rescue...and we thank Candace Botha for caring about the animals and writing us up in her magazine.  www.sarasotapet.com

Our evening fundraiser at Max's Dog Bakery and Shaggy Chic Boutique was nothing but fun!!!  If you missed their monthly Yappy Hour...did you miss out!  Loaded with great folks, the press, many dogs...puppies and happy owners!  Appetizers for all...lots of fabulous shopping...and the hospitality of Beth Ealing and staff could not have been nicer!  Great evening, we made an adoption and hey, we made some money!  Always a good thing.  If you have not visited Max's...you should.  In Sarasota...it is the bakery of bakeries for pupsters!  Located at 1375 Main Street in downtown Sarasota and if you want something special, give Beth a call...941.330.0330.  We thank them for their caring, generous Yappy Hour in our honor...and for helping many rescue groups.  Some pet stores care a lot about the animals...we like to shop at those the most.

Hey Roxy...thanks so much

Miss Susan - yes you can adopt me
Every time we turn around - some one is stepping up to help us and the animals we take in.  So it is imperative we share with you these people and their organizations...because without their help and encouragement...we could not do the work.  If we miss anyone, not to worry...we will catch up next month!  But we hope we get many ... we encourage you to patronize them and thank them on behalf of the Honor Sanctuary.  In some cases, they will give you a discount..so do thank them!!!

One of our biggest and best supporters is Roxy's Pet Depot.  Week after week, month after month...Debbie and her team cannot do enough to help the Honor Sanctuary.  We are so grateful for their ongoing support.  What do they do?  They host low cost spay/neuter calendars and events; low cost immunization programs..Lost and Found, Adoption Flyers, Gift Certificates for new adoptive families; pet portraits...the list goes on and on.  This store is all about the animals and their owners...and get this...the holistic food is the best!  She has a great selection, priced reasonably...and mention Honor Sanctuary and she gives you 5% discount!  Debbie is also a wealth of animal knowledge.  She is a great resource for owners and a kind human for the animals.  For over 4 years, she has helped owners and animals...with high quality foods and retail items for the animals.  We buy our food there...for years.  And shampoos, vitamins, Frontline Plus...collars, leashes...pillows and of course toys!  We like to patronize pet friendly stores and especially those who reach out to help and make it better for the animals needing rescue.  Roxy's Pet Depot has always been there.  Stop in and see Debbie.  8437 Honore Ave. @ University Centre...just west of I 75 on the north side of University Parkway - and across from the Target.

From their website:  www.roxyspetdepot.com

'Roxy's is a company started by pet lovers for pet lovers.  We specialize in holistic pet foods primarily for dogs and cats as well as supplements, toys, collars and leads.  We have a large selection of foods to choose from.  Customer service is a high priority here.  Frequently, we help allergy-prone dog owners to find the right resolution through a better selection of food and treats to alleviate skin and stomach problems.   Are you looking for a car seat for your dog as well as dog carriers or backpacks?  We have those too!'  We will be posting Roxy's next event...YAPPY HOUR.  Coming soon...

We don't sell pets - we cater to them!

We like to patronize those who help us help the animals...thanks Debbie.

A young mother in pain...needing help. We help.

We get calls for animals in distress, in great need...

We do what we can to help...sometimes we have to let go

They called us from the animal emergency room...would we take a mother dog and her unborn pups - the mother has grave injuries...our vet tech and one of our very caring vets took the time on a Saturday afternoon to drive over and see what could be done...unfortunately the ravages of a car accident did not leave choice.  The mom and her unborn babies did not make it.  Sad to say, they cannot all be saved.  We know this and you know this...but still always, there are people who try.  From the kind staff who took her in and made the call to us to help...to our kind and caring, and so knowledgable volunteers, our excellent Vet Tech, Karissa Mayer and one of the best vets in Sarasota, Dr. Carolyn Kohn  - they spent their Saturday afternoon evaluating her - then holding her for her good bye and serene journey to the Rainbow Bridge...all care and all try to help.

Moral of this tragedy:  cars kill.  Keep your animals in your home, in your fenced yard...on a leash...safe from the highway.

This poor sweet mom left medical bills which will be pretty substantial.  If you can help us pay them, we would be very appreciative.  She was given pain medication and helped with kindness on her journey. Her owners could not even afford to have her spayed - and left her abandoned at the animal emergency room.

Whether we are able to save the animal-sometimes not possible-please know we try...it costs.

If you can help...please do so.  You can use paypal on our website or mail a check or just call us, 941.302.0933.

To donate, help defray medical costs..please visit our paypal portal - greatly appreciated

Our January - Super Second Saturday Adoptathon!

Buddy is looking for a home...he is a great fella

Honor Sanctuary had our first adoption event of 2008

at University Centre Shops on Saturday, January 12th from 10am - 2pm

We were adjacent to the BJ's and so many friends / shoppers stopped by to say Hello, see what we were doing and learn about us.  Greyhound Racing had a table and shared information on their great dogs too.

We had a fabulous assortment of dogs and they were raring to make new friends...and we had a couple 'alumni' stop by and bark at us also with their new families!!!  Wooooohoooo !!

This is Mason or as we now call him...Buddy!  Is he adorable...can you believe someone gave him up???  What were they thinking?? He is fabulous...and although Buddy is still in foster..we know the right family will come along soon...he is just too special!

If you would like more information on Buddy and how to meet him, call or email and we will get you the information and on his schedule!

We have the best volunteers in the world!  They foster the dogs and cats...they set up tents, tables...just a great day for adoptions and we certainly thank Benderson Development for their continuing support.

Honor Sanctuary will be at this same location on the second Saturday of every month in 2008 - and we will have an array of small dogs, big dogs, white, black and brown dogs...and some yellow ones!  Purebreeds, crossbreeds and silly breeds...all wonderful and looking for the right home.

Visit our Calendar of Events to see what's going on!

Adoption...cats? kittens? dogs?

Friendly the cat...hey, adopt me and make your life complete!

We have quite a selection...the cats are so loved...if you have room for one, you have room for two!!  and do we not have the cutest ones???

All spayed and neutered, with and without attitude...but ready to be a fun and loving family member.  Cats, like dogs...like mates and friends...what you may find is that they really do well in pairs.

Animals just know that love is the answer...how come we have to work so hard to know and they just always know?

They will teach you about friendship and love and acceptance.  They listen to your jokes, your stories...your hard day at work...and offer the best response you can get.  Love.

A National Tragedy

A national epidemic, a local problem...the home foreclosure market is very sad.  So many people struggling and losing their homes.  And just as tragic is the animals that are left in the homes - to be found dead or starving...or they let the animal go...abandoned on the streets.  Either way, it is a sad situation.

What can you do?  Are there homes in foreclosure in your neighborhood?  Can you help the pet owners find a place to surrender their pet?  Help them with adoption.  Do not place 'FREE to good home' want ads...those ads take companion animals to research labs or 'bait' dogs.

If you hear of a homeowner, friend, family in trouble...gently offer to help...and know you can call us.  If we cannot take the animal in, we will help direct you or your friend to a place that can.  In times like this, we need to reach out and help each other.  Help the animals.  They did not ask for any of this.

And always suggest adopting a pet...they are the best kind.  You can make a difference.

We thank you in advance for caring...and for your kind actions to help.

Our Mission, Our Vision and a few FAQ's
Our Mission is to offer care and a peaceful living environment for abused, physically handicapped, aged or homeless animals; and to always find and encourage a forever home for all animals that come to us. We believe in community collaboration in the true spirit of saving as many healthy adoptable animals as possible. Join us on our journey...join the Honor Sanctuary; join our Volunteers; become a Foster Family...save an animal for no other reason then it is the right thing to do.

Our Vision
We are founded on the belief that no animal should have to go hungry, be homeless or live in fear or pain. The Sanctuary believes that all animals deserve to be treated with dignity, kindness, and respect; and provided with care that increases their opportunity for a safe and healthy life.

FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions of Honor Sanctuary

Does Fostering work?  How can I help?

Many animal rescue groups are now going to the model of fostering animals.  The animals are socialized, cared for and most of all...not caged.  Caging is foreign to dogs.  They are meant to run free...in a safe environment.  They need to play and sleep and be normal.  Fostering makes them better adoption candidates.  You can help foster an animal that needs you for its journey home.  We help with everything, training, food...support.  You provide love and nurturing...discipline and guidance.  Fostering is a short term temporary assignment.

What is the difference between NO Kill and other options?  Doesn't all facilities / groups have to kill / euthanize sometimes?

No Kill means animals are NEVER killed due to overpopulation in a shelter.  Some animals are ill, with a poor prognosis.  If they cannot be treated, in pain, with no hope...we do the right thing by the animal.  As kindly and lovingly as we can.  We believe in this as many other animal rescue groups do.  It is a message about who we are as a community and society.  For more on No Kill and why it is vital that we embrace this philosophy and action plans...go to  http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/

What do you need the most?  (hey, isn't this FAQ a repeat??? )

We need foster families (Journey Home) and donations.  The Journey Home is our foster program.  This is the lifeblood of our organization and the most innovative and kind way to manage the animals.  Loving them, nurturing them and socializing them helps them to be a great new family member.  Can you be a foster family?  Great learning experience for your family and you are saving animals.  We train, assist and provide food and medical services...it is one of the most gratifying things you can do.  We need you...if you know of someone who would be interested, please have them contact us.

Donations pay for the medical bills and will help us open an Adoption Facility in the east county on a permanent basis.  Doing adoptions in high traffic shopping areas is done across the country by many organizations and it makes sense.  We also see the value in having one location for adoptions and a larger second location for the Sanctuary.  Right now we need to get the animals adopted.  If you care about animal rescue - please join us and help us get our facility open sooner then later.

Are you doing fundraising?  Galas? Walkathons? Corporate Sponsorships?

Yes we will be doing a number of fund raising events.  We need money to pay for medical bills for the animals...we need money for a facility and for land.  Yes we will be doing lots of events...and we need your help.  Join us.  Save a dog, save a cat...make a difference.

More next issue...please email your questions, we are glad to answer.
